Went to the Berlin Bienale in June which was brilliant but I think some of my favourite stuff was the permanent things that were in Berlin and the city itself was so interesting.

Something that I got really excited about was being able to stand on a piece of work by Carl Andre but was equally dissapointed when I got home and foung out that I missed seeing a work by Richard Serra who is one of my favourite artists.

Marlins Wynd was the organisation that I worked with for my community placement. I worked with Neil Nodzak and Pavlos Georgiou in a collaborative manner, our idea was to  create an original piece of artwork in their space.

I had been looking into the history of the vaults and as fascinating as it was we all felt it would work better to work more with the architecture of the vault itself. The three of us are interested in line and the quality of minimalism which is why I think we all found it easy to work together as our ideas all complimented each others. From our discussions we decided the work was going to respond to the site taking inspiration from the architecture. When it came to materials we each brought our own materials that we felt responded to the site so the materials were very much down to the individuals own interpretation of the space.

We experimented with all the materials that we had brought, evaluating each set along the way.

We began to think about ways that the wood could balance from the vault instead of the string. So by removing the string we managed to create the same sculpture but instead of balancing on the string it was balancing on the vault. I thought this was really strong because not only did the sculpture take inspiration from the room but it depended on the room for support and therefore to exist at all. The sculpture was made from two pieces of wood which connected the floor to the ceiling, a mirror and a sheet of metal were placed directly underneath which created depth elongating the sculpture. The square shape of the mirror and metal showed a direct link between the shapes of the floor. We introduced one of the first set ups we did with the wood which was set up in the corner which helped to compliment the other wood sculpture and the entire installation came together making the room work as one.

As we looked through the photos we had been taking as we set up each installation we decided to leave this installation in the room as opposed to the other ones because unlike the material set up it could support itself against the vault and we felt it was the strongest piece of work out of all the set ups and responded best to the room.
